Welcome to Singapore!
When in the presence of a lion, be it in the shape of an animal or an entire city of people, I can only show my profound respect. . .
The name “Singapore” was adapted by the British from its original Malay name, “Singapura”, which means “Lion City”.
I had often read books and magazines about the great Lion City, established on an island at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. I was fascinated by its history and how it transformed itself from a British trading post into its own economic empire and one of the largest ports in the planet. As a photographer of cities and urban landscapes, its magnificent skyline was always of interest as well. Without a doubt, Singapore is an international crossroads traversed by travelers, industrialists, entrepreneurs, explorers and, most recently, a boy who used to be crazy about “National Geographic World” magazines in elementary school.
My visit to Singapore was a personal moment of reckoning -- finally reaching one of the destinations I had learned so much about since childhood.
